How to Choose the Right Suit for Your Little Gentleman
Dressing children in suits isn’t something you do every day, so it's no wonder it can be a little tricky to get it right, especially considering each child is different. Here at Marc Darcy, we like to think we know a thing or two about tailoring. Whether you’re kitting out your mini me for a wedding, special occasion or birthday party, we’re on hand to help with our expert hints and tips.
Factors to Think About When Picking a Suit
Occasion and Dress Code
The first port of call when choosing a suit for your little one is to consider the dress code. Different events call for different suits. For example:
-
Weddings often need a smart, classic look with a suit in neutral colours.
-
Birthday parties might allow brighter colours and fun patterns.
-
Formal ceremonies demand elegant and simple styles.
Understanding the dress code will help you choose the right fabric and style so your child looks appropriately dressed and feels confident.
Age and Growing Needs
Any parent will tell you how quickly children grow out of clothes! To make the most of your suit purchase, look for suits that will grow with them. Features like adjustable waistbands or removable hems are a big help. Try to choose a size that allows for some growth; a few styling tweaks like a belt and pulling in the waistcoat straps will help to create a more fitted look.
Top Tip: Most trousers typically have 1-3 cm of fabric at the hem that can be let down for additional length. Consult a tailor to drop the hem and re-hem at the desired length.
Fabric and Material
Fabric choice is one of the most important factors to consider, often determined by the time of year the event is held and the prevailing weather conditions. Popular options include:
-
Wool Mix: Warm and durable, this fabric is ideal for cooler weather events
-
Elastane Blend: Soft and flexible, this type of fabric is perfect for ease of movement
-
Linen: Light and fresh, but wrinkles easily. This fabric is normally reserved for summer events.
For very young children, consider softer fabrics and simpler styles. Any suit with added elastane or Lycra is perfect for younger children who are on the move a lot! Older children might prefer more tailored and contemporary designs.

Comfort and Movement
As well as flexible fabrics, it's wise to look for suits that have features like elastic waistbands, soft linings, and breathable fabrics. Children are naturally active, so choosing a suit that is as comfortable as possible will ensure they keep it on for the special occasion (or at least until the pictures are taken!)
Style and Design
Children's suit styles have evolved significantly in recent years. Classic options include single-breasted three-piece suits available in neutral colours such as black, navy, and blue. Our children’s collection is designed to match our adult suits, so while you will find traditional styles, there are also more playful options like tweed and check patterns, all featuring the same signature Marc Darcy details in a smaller size. Consider what will best suit your child's personality and the event they’ll be attending.
Proper Fit and Measurements
Getting the right fit is key. Use a flexible tape to get accurate measurements of your child.

Often, we find parents will have to go up a size and have the suit tailored to fit their child. Kids grow fast, so it's always best to size up. By using some simple styling tricks, you can make the suit fit better.
Tips from Industry Experts on Finding the Best Suit
Use Size Guides and Measurement Charts
Once you have your child's measurements, cross-reference them to our children's size chart here to find the correct size for your child.
Key Fit Areas and Adjustments
Pay attention to key areas:
-
Shoulders: Should sit perfectly without extending beyond the joint.
-
Chest: Allow a finger or two’s space for comfort.
-
Waist: Should be snug but not tight.
-
Length: Sleeves should end where your wrist meets your hand.
If needed, consider tailoring. Small adjustments can make a big difference in how a suit looks and feels.
Choosing Accessories
As well as our children's suits, we also have a range of matching children's accessories. From knitted ties and bowties to bold, colourful silk style ties and bowties, all made to match the lining of our suits.

Caring for Your Child’s Suit
Washing and Storage Tips
As with the men’s suits, children's suits are generally dry clean only. You should care for your children's suits in the same way you do an adult's. Hang the suit on the proper hanger, spot clean any small marks and stains and keep it in the suit bag to prevent dust and wrinkles.
Regular Maintenance
As children are more active, you may find you need to check for loose buttons or tears more frequently. Minor repairs like tightening loose buttons or fixing a small tear should be done promptly. If necessary, visit a tailor for custom adjustments and fixes to keep the suit looking sharp.
