How To Wear Velvet

It's not too often that velvet makes an appearance at formal occasions but if there ever was a perfect time for it, the festive season would undoubtably be it. 'Tis well and truly the season for lashings of velvet in sophisticated yet subdued shades of burgundy wine, midnight navy and classic black. Get acquainted with this luxurious fabric just in time for Christmas celebrations....

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VELVET SUIT

Known to have originated in the Far East, velvet suits really had their moment in the 1970s. People were beginning to take a stand against social norms with regards to fashion, and desired clothing which packed more of a punch than the conservative grey three piece. Bold colours and textures made an appearance on those in the public eye which in turn influenced the masses. This is where velvet was introduced widely among society.  

HOW TO STYLE THEM? 

As outlandish as it may be, a velvet suit is surprisingly easy to style. We'd advise keeping the focus on the velvet so your best bet is a white shirt. However ostentatious you are feeling, you can either wear a complete velvet three piece or tone it down with some simple flat fronted black trousers. 

Now to accessorise! Some may prefer to play it safe but consider adding even more character to your look with some quirky touches. A silk scarf in a complementary colour and pattern will add extra pizazz, and create a pattern clash which will most certainly pay off. A partywear staple, the bowtie, must be considered when styling your velvet suit and don't forget a pair of freshly polished black shoes. If the occasion is a little more relaxed, consider swapping out your shirt for a roll neck knit.
