What To Wear To Match Your Wedding Theme

Planning a wedding is no small feat, and one of the most important decisions you'll face is your suit. But, with a multitude of factors to consider, not to mention the theme and colours you’ve chosen, it's hard to know if you’re making the right choice.

Fortunately, here at Marc Darcy we know a thing or two about suit styling. In this guide, we'll walk you through several popular wedding themes and which suit options will work the best to match your vision…

Top wedding themes

Wedding themes are a great way to help you shape your vision for the big day. They are, of course, completely up to you and your personal style as a couple – but there are several overarching themes that tend to stay popular as the years pass. Below, we’ve picked out a collection of the popular (and our favourite) wedding themes and how you can find the best suit to match…

Black tie

Black tie weddings are stunning. Suited for contemporary or minimalist venues, everyone is dressed to impress – from guests to the happy couple. Fortunately, for the discerning gentlemen, there really is only one option here: the Tux.

Effortlessly suave, a tuxedo is the pinnacle of sophistication, and really the only option for a Black Tie wedding theme. But what distinguishes a tux from the more typical suit? The incorporation of satin. Tuxedos (or dinner jackets) usually have satin lapels, and a satin stripe on the side of the trouser legs for exceptional luxury. This, combined with the single-button blazer and a bow tie, clearly takes the look up a notch for the ultimate in formal wear.

Bohemian

Bohemian weddings are all about personality and connecting with the natural world. If you and your partner have chosen Boho chic as your wedding theme, your suit should be all about expressing who you are as a person.

Since they tend to be more focused on the environment, boho wedding suits are often in earthy tones – namely browns, greens, and rusty reds. They’re also a lot more casual than many expect from a wedding. So, you might want to choose chinos instead of dress trousers, and maybe skip the blazer entirely for a patterned waistcoat. You should also feel free to play with texture. Corduroy, linen, wool, and cotton (depending on the weather) will all look amazing at a Bohemian wedding.

The key is to feel comfortable with your choice. This is the perfect wedding theme to get creative and think outside the box!

Rustic

While not quite the same wedding theme, but definitely thinking along the same vibe as above, rustic weddings are certainly becoming more popular as a way to celebrate your marriage in a more casual way.

Rustic weddings are warm, using warm and textured fabrics like crocheted lace, wicker, wood, and burlap. They also tend to include a lot of DIY – from the table centrepieces, to wedding favours – and often have a lot of mason jars, lanterns, fairy lights, and casual charm.

For your outfit, it’s time to break away from what you think of a classic wedding suit. Instead, you can embrace earthy tones, tweed or wool, and casual comfort. Switch out dress shoes for a Chelsea boot, and mix and match your blazer and trousers into something that matches your personal style. You should also avoid anything overly tailored too. While your suit still needs to fit well, it can be a little looser to give you freedom and movement in more rustic settings (like barns, farmyards, or back gardens).

Maximalist

As a wedding theme, and indeed an overall style, maximalism celebrates the riotous joy of excess, abundance, and luxurious extravagance. This is not for the faint-hearted however. Maximalism combines colour, texture, patterns and more into a type of chaotic cohesion.

If maximalism is your chosen wedding theme, this is the perfect time to embrace unconventional fabrics and colours that you might not pick for an ordinary suit. Jewel tones are perfect here, as they feel extravagant and attention-grabbing. Luxurious fabrics like velvet or satin are top of the pile, and you have the freedom to go all out in colour and pattern. Match paisley with a smaller check to layer patterns, or explore the colour wheel to play and contrast different tones for a maximalist wedding suit.

And, don’t forget the accessories. Jewellery, pocket watches, cufflinks and even your pocket square will all play a role in making sure you match your wedding theme.

Minimalist

At the other end of the spectrum, minimalist weddings are simple and refined. Instead of overloading on pattern and colour, this wedding theme centres around clean lines, simple cuts of fabric, and understated elegance.

For the minimalist gent, the most important aspect of your wedding suit is that it should be exceptionally well-tailored. You want it to fit cleanly, with a simple silhouette that shows you off in the best way possible. Pair this with a simple pair of cufflinks, tie, and watch – and allow your confidence to do the talking.

Minimalist wedding themes also tend to be monochromatic, or have a neutral colour palette, so look for a suit that will fit into your wider design and colours.

Traditional

As a wedding theme, traditional weddings tend to have a heavy focus on timeless elegance. This includes choosing simple colour palettes like white and pastels, an abundant use of fresh flowers and foliage, and elevated table settings (think crystal glassware, fine china crockery, and silver or gold cutlery). Basically, think of this as a blend of a minimalist and black tie wedding.

Of course, if you’re having a traditional wedding, it makes sense to break out the classic wedding suits. A three-piece is essential; but, in a break from minimalism, traditional wedding suits often have a contrasting coloured waistcoat, tie, and pocket square. Matching your waistcoat and accessories to the colours of your wedding theme help you to personalise your suit, and set it apart from others in your wardrobe.

Top tip: if you want to go uber-traditional, you could wear a morning suit (aka ‘tails’) to set you apart from your groomsmen on the big day.

Art Deco

Art Deco is a vibrant interior decorating theme, encompassing the glamorous and sophisticated styles that were popularised in the 1920s and 1930s. Think strong geometric lines, lush colours and fabrics, and plenty of gold. In fact, consider it like maximalism but with more direction.

If you choose an Art Deco wedding theme, we definitely recommend considering a double-breasted suit style. This more symmetrical style was highly popular in the post-war celebrations, and brings a vintage feel to your wedding. You should also move away from black suits. Instead, match navy with some timeless gold accessories, and choose geometric fabrics for your pocket square/tie combo to bring a touch of Art Deco into your outfit.
